Two guys having a drink and some heated conversation in the lounge at Rae and Jerry's, Winnipeg's fab Ratpack era Vegas style steakhouse. Thankfully I have actually been there! [Thanks Jim!]

Simple set as we are running in rep with whatever rentals have been booked. single wall, Godfather style fat wooden blinds, red walls with working practicals. Some red chairs and a table. and that just might be it...

The set with a first pass at colour. Raw muslin upper walls beadboard lower wainscoting. dark wood every where else. Floor will have a wash of earth tones, splashing up on to the levels.

Also added the trees into the up stage void. lit for some scenes, fairy lights in them for the wedding.

Freedom 85

A simple set, central raised platform, picture frames on central wall contain a blank grey [foam core?] interior so we can front project whatever we like into them, wall behind is stretched muslin for lighting different colours from the back.

Doorway is probably going to be left open.

Bead board wainscoting, nice moldings and a painted earth tone floor.

The side pieces will contain shelves and hooks on the upstage side for props and costume pieces.

Simplified structure in the TOV space, no table just steps and levels:

All rises are 6", Runs are 1'-0". The lines at the back represent a door with a window framed within it. Door opens upstage, window opens downstage. no visible hardware please.

The set in the Thousand Islands Playhouse. False proscenium fits Orangeville's existing one and helps ground the small set in the larger space.

Need to work out the support structure and escape stairs still...

I am thinking of stained wood slats so you see through it to the cyc

Table protrusion, top square opens to be Molly's window. the uppermost protrusion [I need to stop calling them that!] is the seats for the circus, the ledge below that is the platform to access that, stairs and an additional ledge for monologs and such.

I am imagining two cafe chairs and a park bench.

After putting a tape to the stage I realized that I was a bit wide with the false proscenium. So here is a smaller version, we will re draft if this is Ok with everyone.

It is only smaller on the outside, sightlines remain unchanged.

Added the false back wall and the doors from White Christmas as the back of the studio. Foreshadowing the reveal of the snowscape.

Also playing with masking options, no colour on these yet, but something that can change colour from song to song through the magic of lighting would be ideal I think.

Also please note the smaller door upstage centre for entrances.

Added dimension to the gate structure, it is drawn at 1 1/2" to be built from 2X2 but could be 1" box steel.

Basic set concept for your consideration:

Band split onto raised stationary upstage left and right platforms.

Upstage I am thinking neutral drapes for lighting in different colour washes. they will cover a false studio back wall with large doors, that open to reveal Vermont in December.

Centre platform is actually two truck units that can be split into different configurations for different songs.

Arches are steel frames that can be lit or silhouetted as needed.

I really missed that one piece of trim so I put it back, and moved it up a bit. Now I am finally happy! You like?

New set in context, plus the pool house units, really just the backs of the Man's apartment.
I found these really tough!

Partly because they cannot have any depth to them to fit where they need to for the bulk of the show.

The doors are practical and will open onstage like french doors, also bear in mind that they are reversed from the original positions.

So right is left and left is right.

Right?

So here it is the first day of rehearsal and I am snowed in...

I left at 7am and was forced to turn around and come back, I think the snowplow guys have been laid off for the season because I have seen no hide nor hair of them!

Thankfully the internets are still up and working...

Anyway...

Here is the updated drawings for the show:

Sky, as you can see I have added a second red flat to the back wall, I think it will give us more definition to the windows [gobos] and helps with the circus feel. Also I cut the Saint Sebastian, after talking with you it did not seem to make sense with all the scenes. and at centre stage it was holding more importance than it deserved.

There will be photo of a plane on the at the gate upstage of the window...

And it will snow throughout the entire show!

There will be a flock of paper airplanes hung from the struts you see at the top of the false proscenium. There is a tremendous amount of art at terminal 1, we want to reflect that a bit.

An old favorite.
I just had a print made and framed as a gift for Diana Leblanc, the director of the Soulpepper production. She and I have worked together three times in the past year so she was due for a gift!

I traveled to New York to the location specified in Edward Albee's play, only to find that it does not actually exist, this was as close as I could find.

I took a lot of digital pictures and made a collage in the style of David Hockney. It was then projected as a backdrop.

So, here are some updates!

The room is exactly 12X12 X10' high, the walls are drawn at 6" thick because I know they will need to be super beefy once three people are chained to them! the door is 2'6"X6'-3" a tad smaller that common, I might shrink a touch more...

The window is bricked up, as per our re purposed storage room idea. the ceiling is 2X 10 framing with painted muslin [or scrim, mmm.] on top so I can light through. I raised the floor to two feet for sightlines and I love how it feels like we are caught in void now, feels more like its underground...

We need 5 4X8 risers and one custom riser, I would love to cover the floor with that tile underlay sheet rock stuff... whatever its called... so that the chains sound right on the ground. On that note lets plan to deaden the sound from underneath as well.
